Uganda Civil Aviation authority plans to expand and upgrade facilities at Uganda’s only International Airport in Entebbe in relation to the global traffic trend. The expansion program is expected to be undertaken in a space of 20 years 20015- 2034 in alignment to Uganda Vision 2040. This project is under the National Development Plan II, Air transport sub-sector which calls for the Upgrade and Expansion of Entebbe International Airport (EIA), Upgrade of Air Navigation Infrastructure to achieve a globally interoperable system for provision of seamless services, Development of a Masterplan and Engineering Designs for Arua Airport, Revival of a National Airline to hub Entebbe International Airport, and Exploration of PPP arrangements for development and management of Arua, Kasese and Gulu Airports.
Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA)’s focus between 2016 – 2021 will be upgrading and expanding Entebbe International Airport which was launched last year in August. The areas of focus are the new passenger terminal building, a domestic operations terminal and milti-storeyed car park, new cargo center, relocation of the fuel farm, an air craft maintenance center and facilities for handling the Airbus 380 craft respectively.
The first phase of the Upgrade and Expansion Plan will include; Construction of a new 100,000 tonnes per annum cargo terminal complete with cooling facilities, aircraft parking Apron, landside and airside access roads; Construction of a 20,000m2 extension to the Passenger Terminal Building; Expansion and rehabilitation of the main Apron; Repair and strengthening of the main Runway with a new asphalt overlay; Strengthening of Runway 12/30; Repair and strengthening of taxiways A, B, C, D and E; Extension of taxiway A parallel to the main Runway; Repair of the secondary Runway with its associated taxiways F,G,H and Apron 2; Repair and strengthening of Apron 4; Provision of a terminal water supply system all expected to be completed by 2018.
Another area to the tackled is the baggage handling system, Entebbe International Airport has had an increase in the air traffic thus need for better facilities to handle Passanger and baggage handling, CAA is looking at installing the new automated systems and more 6 checkin counters, soonest, this will be supplied by a Netherlands firm.
The expansion and Upgrade of Entebbe International Airport will go a long way in enhancing growth in the tourism sector, thence increase in tours to Uganda. Once the plan is fully complete, we will see improved and increased domestic flights as plans to develop upcountry airports are underway. The other Airports will be near touristic areas of Kasese (Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale Forest National Park, Semliki Valley National Park and Mt Rwenzori), Gulu/ Pakwach to service the northern tourism corridor that covers Murchison Falls National Park and Kidepo Valley National Park, this will make planning of tours to Uganda easy.
